The interaction between Apple and Microsoft is a good example. This permanent state of contest doesn’t mean war, though. This can easily fool the crewmates, because the Shapeshifter's role is to select its options to shapeshift (change its form) into a different person, this can be a crewmate or an Impostor. The Shapeshifter is an important Impostor role for the killers. Depending on the options they can also erase them (Impostors will lose their special Impostor ability). By default the Eraser can erase everyone but the Spy and other Impostors. The erase will be performed, even if the Eraser or their target die before the next meeting. After every erase, the cooldown increases by 10 seconds. The targeted players will lose their role after the meeting right before a player is exiled. The Eraser is an Impostor that can erase the role of every player. The Cleaner is an Impostor who has the ability to clean up dead bodies. This also allows them to target since a black arrow appears for them to target a crewmate and an "Assassinate" button appears for them to kill the targets, and this could make them manage to camouflage themselves for a given amount of time until they come back to reality. The Ninja's role in among us is given to the Impostors who can gain Impostor-ninja abilities to target a crewmate in order to end their life. The camouflage mode lasts for 10s and while it is active, all player names/pets/hats are hidden and all players have the same color. The Camouflager is an Impostor which can additionally activate a camouflage mode. Depending on the options, there'll be an arrow pointing towards the current target. ![]() Killing a player that's not their current target results in an increased kill cooldown. The host can select how many players can be shot per game and if multiple players can be shot during a single meeting. If the guess is wrong, the Guesser dies instead. The Guesser can shoot players during the meeting, by guessing its role. If it gets thrown out of the ship, everything is fine. When it's fully grown up its kill cooldown is 2/3 of the default one. While growing up the kill cooldown is doubled. The Mini cannot be killed until it turns 18 years old, however it can be voted out. The Mini's character is smaller and hence visible to everyone in the game. ![]() Our understanding of strike-slip faults has advanced with detailed field mapping, subsurface imaging, and numerical and analogue modelling. Convergent margins with oblique plate trajectories will also generate strike-slip faults in accretionary prisms, forearcs and backarcs. ![]() The characteristic zig zag dismembering of mid-ocean spreading ridges is caused by ridge transforms that accommodate the strain from oblique spreading. They form in oceanic and continental crust/lithosphere. Strike-slip faults occur in most plate tectonic settings, primarily at plate boundaries (like most other fault types). The present trajectory along Alpine Fault is also transpressional. Pacific plate trajectories at Hikurangi margin become increasingly oblique from north to south. The right-lateral Alpine Fault transform and its strike-slip fault splays (Marlborough fault system), in the context of other plate tectonic elements: the Hikurangi subduction zone that is linked to Alpine Fault via Hope Fault and the subduction zone at the south end of South Island where oceanic crust of the Australian Plate is subducting beneath the Pacific plate (opposite polarity to Hikurangi). But he was right… Jumping ahead a few years (and encapsulating several decades of science history in a single sentence), we now know this fault as the Alpine Fault, a dextral, or right-lateral transform strike-slip fault that also doubles as the boundary between the Pacific and Australian plates. Wellman’s hypothesis turned a few heads and invited its share of derision. The consensus at the time was that crustal movements were dominated by vertical displacements. The dislocation was the result of 600 km lateral shift along a major fault. In 1940 Harold Wellman and Dick Willett proposed that two groups of rocks at either end of the South Island of New Zealand, each having the same stratigraphic and lithologic characteristics, were at one time a single unit. The fault splays are clearly delineated by valleys. ![]() The intersection of splay faults that trend northeast indicated by black dots. ![]() The master fault is a prominent linear feature immediately left of the snow line (black arrow, bottom). Strike-slip fault - a fault on which the two blocks slide past one another. The San Andreas Fault is an example of a right lateral fault.Ī left-lateral strike-slip fault is one on which the displacement of the far block is to the left when viewed from either side.Ī right-lateral strike-slip fault is one on which the displacement of the far block is to the right when viewed from either side.An oblique view of Alpine Fault from the International Space Station. Reverse (thrust) fault - a dip-slip fault in which the upper block, above the fault plane, moves up and over the lower block. This type of faulting is common in areas of compression, such as regions where one plate is being subducted under another as in Japan. When the dip angle is shallow, a reverse fault is often described as a thrust fault. Normal fault - a dip-slip fault in which the block above the fault has moved downward relative to the block below. This type of faulting occurs in response to extension and is often observed in the Western United States Basin and Range Province and along oceanic ridge systems. The following definitions are adapted from The Earth by Press and Siever. A fault is a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock. Faults allow the blocks to move relative to each other. This movement may occur rapidly, in the form of an earthquake - or may occur slowly, in the form of creep. Faults may range in length from a few millimeters to thousands of kilometers. Most faults produce repeated displacements over geologic time. During an earthquake, the rock on one side of the fault suddenly slips with respect to the other. The fault surface can be horizontal or vertical or some arbitrary angle in between.Įarth scientists use the angle of the fault with respect to the surface (known as the dip) and the direction of slip along the fault to classify faults. Faults which move along the direction of the dip plane are dip-slip faults and described as either normal or reverse (thrust), depending on their motion. Faults which move horizontally are known as strike-slip faults and are classified as either right-lateral or left-lateral. Faults which show both dip-slip and strike-slip motion are known as oblique-slip faults. ![]() ![]() ![]() What if, biomechanical engineer Dale Bass suggested, the modeling software could virtually reconstruct the attack on the Housatonic and reveal insights into the fate of the Hunley? Lance, a history buff, was hooked: a historical mystery with a tantalizing lead to follow. ![]() Lance was modeling an underwater explosion at a computer in Duke’s Injury Biomechanics Lab, where she studied blast injuries, when her adviser had the epiphany that set her Hunley obsession in motion. “I’m taking you to the campus pond to see where we ran some of our experiments,” she thunders back. On a warm September Saturday, I’m standing outside the student center at Duke, a low-rise contemporary building accented with the university’s signature neo-Gothic stone, when Lance swings around the bend in a blue Pontiac Grand Prix straight out of Motor City where she grew up. Without collaboration or key pieces of data, could Lance’s account of the final moments of the Hunley and its crew be right? But how she made the discovery is almost as surprising as the discovery itself: she did it without access to the physical sub, which was excavated in 2000 without prior experience in archaeology or forensics and without help from the Hunley Project, a team of researchers and scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina that has been on the case full time for the past 17 years. If she’s right, the mystery of the Hunley may finally be put to rest. Photo by Mic Smith Photography LLC/Alamy Stock Photo Hunley, which is now held at Clemson University in South Carolina, had sunk twice during prior voyages before its mission to take down the USS Housatonic in 1864. After three years of sleuthing, Rachel Lance, a US Navy biomedical engineer who holds a PhD from Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering in North Carolina, concludes that the blast from the sub’s own torpedo sent blast waves through its iron hull and caused instant death for the eight men inside. Now, one maverick scientist is making the bold claim that she has cracked the case. ![]() Its demise has baffled scores of researchers and Civil War buffs for more than a century. Just after the brief moment of glory, the Hunley, which had just become the world’s first successful combat submarine, mysteriously sank. By 9:00 p.m., it was over: the Hunley had thrust its spar-mounted torpedo into the Housatonic’s hull and within seconds, 60 kilograms of black powder had caved in the ship. The crew hand-cranked the sub more than six kilometers toward its target-the Union blockader USS Housatonic-and surfaced like a leviathan for the charge.
